  Classical Greek was a quantity-sensitive language with trochaic feet. Modern Greek remained trochaic but, with the loss of vowel length and monophthongisation ceased to be quantity-sensitive. Thus, the surface stressing of words, transparent in Classical Greek, became partly opaque in Modern Greek. The adjective is regular in its stressing, which is predominantly antepenultimate, while the noun is less homogeneously stressed, withsubregularities depending on declension class.
