  Roots are stressed on their penultimate syllable. The addition of a derivational affix generally effects a shift in stress from the penultimate syllable of the root form to the penultimate syllable of the derived word. Inflectional endings function as clitics in Konjo. That is, the inflectional ending is not treated as existing for purposes of stress placement. There are forms that are stressed on their antepenultimate syllable. These are forms contaning an Echo Vowel (an epenthetic vowel with words ending in /r l s/). Vocatives have final stress. Secondary stress occurs on the first syllable of a word if it is removed at least one syllable from the primary stress. (Friberg & Friberg 1989)
