  Timorese stems are disyllabic and as a rule the stress falls on its first syllable. There are a few exceptions to this rule. Certain disyllables starting with /pa/ or /pe/ and some loanwords, have stress on the final syllable. Possibly /pa/ and /pe/ are regarded as prefixes. Trisyllabic words are usually compounds. They have primary stress on the second stem. Since there is a certain dislike to the presence of more than one fully stressed syllable in a word, compounds of two disyllabic members are often reduced to three syllables by means of elimination, whereby the stress on the first member is considerably weakened. If a compound consists of a disyllabic first member and a monosyllabic second member, the main stress falls on the final syllable and a secondary stress on the first syllable.. (Middelkoop 1950)
