  In assigning stress in Larike, it is necessary to have access to the underlying root. Stress does not shift; it is always associated with the underlying penultimate syllable of the root. It should be emphasized that this is not always the same as the surface penultimate syllable of the root. There are several roots that contain a final VV sequence where the VV sequence is pronounced as a surface diphthong. Once primary stress has been assigned, secondary stress is then assigned following an alternating pattern. Secondary stress falls on the second (and fourth) surface syllable away from the primary stressed syllable. Since stress does not shift off the underlying penultimate syllable of the root, secondary stress can occur either to the right or the left of the primary stressed syllable. (Laidig 1992)
