18: Stress monosyllables. Polysyllables have stress on alternating syllables, depending on word class. Primary stress is always penultimate, but in nouns secondary stress is assigned to all alternate syllables before the main stress (no adjacent stresses allowed), and in verbs, secondary stress is assigned to the first syllable and all alternates thereafter, but not the syllable abutting the main stress. (Lynch 1978:18)
