  Standard Serbian and Croatian have lexically specified high tones, which, when possible, spread to the preceding syllable. Postlexically, stress is assigned to the first syllable with tone, or, in toneless words, to the first syllable. The stress-system, then, can be described as a tone-sensitive first/first system.
