The inherent prominence of a lexical root is expressed by its foot here meaning the (fixed) stress-bearing vowel in the penultimate syllable of the lexeme. Feet are preserved in [+ long] vowel syllables or heavy syllables. Feet are nullified in [- long] vowel syllables or light syllables. Feet are preserved in light syllables if separated by one unstressed syllable. The last foot in a section (phonological phrase) bears the main stress whereas all the preceding feet in that section have secondary stress. (van Engelenhoven 1995)
