49-50: The phonological word consists of a syllable or group of syllables with only one primary word stress. Since this stress occurs on final syllables of words in most cases and in most other cases is followed by stressless syllables which are distinguishable from pre-stress syllables of other words, symbolization of primary stress is unnecessary. Stressless syllables following the primary stress are clitics. In most words of three or more syllables not in the final contour of a sentence, the initial syllable is pronounced with somewhat increased loudness and a secondary upward pitch glide. The middle syllable or syllables are shorter, lower and less stress than either the first or the final syllable. (Bromley 1961:49-50)
