112-113: The Mairasi phonological word consists of two to seven syllables. Words most commonly have two, three, or four syllables. Primary stress falls on the penultimate syllable. Secondary stress on words of more than three syllable occurs on the first syllable. There are two contrastive pitch levels in Mairasi. They contrast only on stressed syllables, which normally take a higher pitch than unstressed or secondarily stressed syllables. Thus, the contrast manifests itself when the stressed syllable of a word is higher than the stressed syllable of another word. This represents an incomplete system remotely akin to that of the Ekagi language 150 km. to the east. (Peckham 1991:112-113)
