13-14: Stress does not differentiate words and for all practical purposes is sufficiently predictable. Words, as a general rule, have the stress on the last syllable. Compound words usually have the stress on the last syllable and follow the general rule of simple words. Reduplicated compounds receive a double stress of equal intensity. Clitics never receive stress. Proper names, as a general rule, have penultimate stress. Special attention must be paid to words ending in open syllables. The main stress is on the first syllable (if disyllabic) or there is an equally strong double stress. (Luzbetak 1956:13-14)

31: Stress has been analysed as phonemic on the basis of its unpredictableness. In many words it is indistinguishable from high tone. It is divided into primary and secondary stress on the word level. (Phillips 1976:31)
