In words with 3 or more syllables, secondary stress occurs on on all heavy syllables. In sequences of light syllables, secondary stress falls on the even numbered syllables, counting from the left edge of the sequence. This pattern is used only for the sake of defining main stress. Secondary stress is absent on the surface.
