Stress in Tontemboan falls on the penultimate syllable of the word, irrespective of whether the word is a stem or a derived word. There are no vowels that can't bear stress. Syllables with /@/ can be stressed. Only when the penultimate syllable contains a schwa and the final syllable is closed and has one of the vowels /a o e/ stress often falls on the final syllable. However, when the onset of the final syllable is prenasalised or preglottalised the stress usually falls on the penult anyway. (Adriani & Adriani 1908)
